3D: Tips to Reignite Consumer Interest
Robert Archer | 05/18 06:14 AM,

A couple of years ago, 3D video was riding a wave of popularity fueled by “Avatar” and several other notable films that demonstrated the technology's potential. Now after enduring a series of flops, Hollywood isn’t so over-the-top in its promotion of 3D. But studios are still producing 3D content, despite the damage caused by Hollywood before a majority of consumers were able to experience 3D in a proper setting. In many respects, the consumer electronics industry has been left to pick up the pieces after collectively making a sizable investment…

Once a 3D system is setup and ready to demo, installers have one more variable to deal with: choosing the right content. To help dealers wade through the mediocrity of 3D content, Runco has developed a content list for installers to use. “We love the 3D content that’s come on to the market during the last few years," says Jennifer Davis, VP of marketing for Runco. "Runco provides a demo guide to our authorized dealers with specific recommendations that includes starting and stopping points for each clip and what to…

The rumors are actually true! Panasonic announced plans to offer "Avatar" on Blu-ray 3D, as an exclusive for buying one of the company's 2010 VIERA 3D TVs. All you have to do to get the goods is purchase a little something from Panasonic's line of VIERA VT or GT Series 3D plasma TVs. From there, you will get the option of a free Panasonic DMP-BDT100 Blu-ray 3D player or $249.95 toward a SC-BTT350 3D home theater setup. Oh, you'll also get the Panasonic 3D Full HD Ultimate Pack, which includes…

‘Avatar’ 3D Blu-ray Coming in December, Exclusive to Panasonic TVs
Rachel Cericola | 09/03 07:27 AM,
2 Comments
Those waiting for a 3D version of the "Avatar" Blu-ray shouldn't have to wait too much longer. According to Twice, the biggest movie of all time will finally come to 3D Blu-ray this December. Don't get too excited, though; the release will be an exclusive to Panasonic. The manufacturer just announced another leg in its partnership with 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, which will give that specific privilege to Panasonic customers for an undetermined time. This is not the first time that Panasonic has hosted an "Avatar"-related promotion. The company…

Director James Cameron seems to be single-handedly keeping 3D in the news. Aside from talking up the re-release of "Avatar," his latest 3D endeavor will capture life on Mars. One of Cameron's next collaborations will be with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and Malin Space Science Systems. According to Popular Mechanics, the three will develop a stereoscopic camera for Mars exploration. "Not only a 3D camera, but a 3D motion camera," Cameron told the magazine. "So if it all goes the way it could, we could be shooting a 3D…

There isn't a ton of at-home 3D entertainment currently available. Hustler plans to do something about that. The porno mag has announced plans for a 3D movie based on the mega-hit Avatar. Apparently, when James Cameron was out touting the benefits of 3D, the magazine took note - as well as his movie idea. According to Screen Junkies, the movie will be called This Ain't Avatar XXX, and should be available this September. Hustler also says this will be the company's most expensive production to date. I have to figure…

Avatar 3D Blu-ray Finally Coming?
Rachel Cericola | 05/27 12:25 PM,

Well, finally, Fox is putting Avatar on 3D Blu-ray. Isn’t that what this whole 3D thing is about? Don’t get too excited, though. The rumor has not been confirmed by 20th Century Fox. Also, if those rumors are actually true, Hollywood in HiDef says the 3D Blu-ray will only be available with the purchase of Panasonic 3D equipment. Lame! Add that to what you already spent on the 2D Blu-ray, and it’s no wonder why James Cameron’s epic is the biggest money-maker of all-time. The good news is: After a…

Avatar Blu-ray Snafu Opens Doors to Service Plans
Julie Jacobson | 05/03 04:47 AM,

You probably have heard about the problems with the new Avatar Blu-ray, which has been gumming up playback, thanks to new DRM features implemented by Fox. The problem can be solved with firmware updates, but most consumers who were psyched to play their shiny new disk wouldn’t know that. Steven Cheung of Vidabox, which makes media servers, reminds us that this experience provides a perfect opportunity to sell service plans. For its part, Vidabox offers and optional “Proactive” service plan, according to Cheung: Any Blu-ray updates are automatically pushed out,…

Recycle Your 3D Glasses!
Rachel Cericola | 04/28 08:13 AM,

I recently went to see "Alice in Wonderland." On my way out of the theater, I noticed huge bins for collecting 3D glasses. I threw mine in - but it looked like I was alone. Now, I have plenty of stuff lying around the house: junk mail, a few boxes that need to be broken down, tons of magazines, Blu-rays, kiddie toys ... do I really need 3D glasses as a souvenir? So that got me thinking: Do YOU recycle your 3D glasses? According to Geek Sugar, 42.1 million 3D…

Vudu/Walmart Gets Streaming HD Exclusive on Avatar
Julie Jacobson | 04/21 09:24 PM,

Evidently, it pays to have the highest-definition instant-streaming video capabilities (1080p/24) on the planet. Vudu – which does – has the exclusive on Avatar in live HD streaming. (Perhaps Walmart's bet paid off.) It’s available now. Vudu began streaming the movie – not in 3D of course – to Vudu-enabled TVs and settop boxes at midnight. “Most other services will have Avatar in SD but not in HD,” the company says. Playstation will have it in HD, but you can’t watch it instantly. You have to download it. Other than…
