Walking around the show floor at CES 2011, it did seem that everyone was saying something like "Hey, did you see the LG booth? What a crazy video wall!" Indeed, LG's video wall was a sight to behold (and we beheld!), with its 130 screens very fitting for the environment of Las Vegas excess and glitz. However, we'd be remiss not to mention a couple of other jaw-dropping signs of display manufacturers going the extra mile to continue their 3D push. After all, 3D is more immersive and impressive as… View this story

Richard Glikes, executive director of the Home Technology Specialists of America (HTSA), has never pulled punches. His latest salvo is directed at manufacturers of connected TVs/streaming media services and 3D devices, who continue to ignore the custom market and its veteran and experienced sales staffs in favor of big-box stores, which he claims have been botching the introductions of these technologies. Specifically, he points to 3D and Google TV, saying they are now "stillborn" because the wrong channel was selected to present them. Here is his full letter: I saw… View this story

Following up on its announcement last month of three 3D TVs, Vizio is coming out with yet another, and it’s a big one. The 65-inch XVT3D650SV is an edge-lit LED LCD TV with 32 zones of local dimming in a system the company calls Razor. The most striking feature of this model is what the company calls Theater 3D, which is basically a platform supporting passive, rather than active 3D viewing glasses. Most current 3D TVs (including others from Vizio) use glasses with built-in LCD shutters that must be powered… View this story

I rarely go to malls, especially if it’s a big one like Mall of America (MOA) in Minneapolis, and especially if it’s in December – when the crazies come out to shop and the snow banks usurp precious parking space. But mall-hating techno-geeks like myself just might brave the crowds and the cold the week of December 8, when Panasonic spreads 3D joy at MOA and elsewhere throughout the country. The visit is part of Panasonic’s Unwrap 3D tour, landing at 14 different malls starting Dec. 1. The hands-on exhibit… View this story

3D TV is getting a bum rap in some circles, but many CE pros are using the technology to draw crowds to their stores and to strike up new conversations with clients. These three integrators all use 3D to bring in new business. A 3D Birthday Party Like many specialty A/V retailers, Home Theater Gallery by Stram Electronics uses 3D hype and co-op dollars from vendors to lure clients into its Tampa, Fla., store. In its biggest affair yet, the company jointly celebrated 3D TV and owner Mike Stram’s 50th… View this story

To this point most of the talk of 3D televisions have focused on a few specific brands of flat-panel television manufacturers and a growing number of projector companies. Very quietly this past fall one of the world's biggest electronics companies joined the ranks of 3D gear manufacturers when it released its new line of 3D flat-panel televisions. Toshiba's newly launched WX800 Cinema Series televisions are available in a choice of 46- and 55-inch screen sizes and aesthetically, the TVs measure less than 1.2-inches deep and they incorporate chrome accents that… View this story

Each week, we aim to provide an informative - yet colorful - profile of one of your fellow CE pros. How would you use Twitter to describe what your company does (140 character limit)? Intuitive, Invisible, Incredible. We are technology contractors, electronically enriching the spaces where our customers live, work and play. After you complete a project, what do you think your typical client tells his friend about the experience? “Call eLifespaces. They’re a one-stop shop for electronics, computers, HDTVs and more. But you really need to check out their… View this story

While 3D TVs and Blu-ray players are trickling onto the market, 3D content is lagging behind. This presents problems for CE pros looking to demonstrate 3D. The only 3D Blu-ray title currently available is Dreamworks’ “Monsters vs. Aliens.” As the 3D community waits for DirecTV and Verizon Fios to join Comcast in carrying 3D channels, there are some other 3D options, said Mark Spector, AVAD Region East 2 (Woburn, Mass.) branch manager, during a two-day 3D event hosted by the distributor at its 26 U.S. and two Canadian branches April… View this story

Will we all watch 3D TV in the future, or will it remain a niche product meant for science fiction movies, video games, or special sporting events? As we've seen with the breakout success of "Avatar," there is definitely consumer willingness to enjoy 3D at the movies. But it is still an open question whether consumers will buy a 3D experience for the home. Here are ten reasons why in-home 3D TV may never achieve mass market appeal. Glasses - Need I say more. Who wants to buy them, keep… View this story

Panasonic is spreading 3D love across the country with its Touch the Future Tour. I caught up with the gang at the Minneapolis stop, held in a hard-to-find spot of a surprisingly sleepy mall. Even so, they tell me, the first day brought in almost 560 people. While Panasonic showed off a variety of technologies including its Lumix cameras and HD camcorders, the highlight was 3D. Not only is the picture outstanding, “we pride ourselves in the design of the glasses,” says Kevin Frank, senior co-marketing manager of Panasonic’s Consumer… View this story
