TV behind mirror in bathroom

Hello everyone,

I have a prospective client who would like to install an LCD behind a 2 way mirror in their master bathroom.  (probably a 19”, we’ll have to re frame the studs with a couple of headers)

My questions are:

1. Have you done this before?

2. If so, what are the concerns as related to power, control, audio, heat / ventilation?

They don’t have a whole house music system, so I’m going to have to do a local source amplifier and add a stereo input ceiling speaker. (Attic access above it all).

The wall behind the mirror is the wall in the bedroom. They would prefer not to do anything to that wall as far as cutting holes or anything to do with ventilation. I’m thinking we’ll need to find some kind of ventilation that pipes up to the attic above the room. Does somebody like Middle Atlantic make such a thing?

Thanks a lot.

We’ve done one with not problems. We used a PVC pipe from the enclosed space to the attic with a small fan mounted on top. Installed another PVC pipe into the basement below to allow fresh air into the enclosed space.

Contact a company called Seura, the make custom mirrors that have TV brackets attached to the mirror, the units are not cheap, but very well designed. Also keep in mind that these can be somewhat difficult to install based on weight of the mirror and location.

Definitely look into Seura.  For ventilation take a look at Active Thermal.  They have a lot of good solutions for ventilating tight areas and TVs.

I have installed a few display behind mirrors, the one thing that I would be concerned with is accessibility.  It would be best to have access to the display with out pulling the mirror off the wall.  I also agree with looking at Active Thermal Management for your cooling needs.  You might want to look at the specs of the display to find out how much BTU/ heat it will be generating.  When you have that information I would call ATM and explain what your up to.  Good Luck

Thanks for your help everyone. The customer has decided against this project due to not wanting to cut the wall behind the TV, which would be in their master bedroom.

When you turn off the TV, the mirror hides the display, a concept that will not only fit well in the bathroom, but in a living room or bedroom as well. The company offers lots of fancy frames that disguise that LCD so well that it will fit in anywhere. There was no word on pricing, but this can’t be cheap.
