I would like to hear from anyone who has partnered with a security integrator on the pros and cons of doing this.  What type of financial agreement do you have and what about the recurring revenue.

We started off only offering security wiring when contracted for low voltage jobs.  We would then tell the customer they would need to find a security dealer.  At one point there was a dealer that offered us a referral fee.  We never got one after referring customers.  So needless to say they didn’t get very many customers from us.

There are plenty of monitoring services you could sign up with that will handle monitoring for you and you’ll have more control of you accounts and the revenue.  But talk to your insurance agent about the affect on your liability premiums and you will need to update your paperwork.  We signed up with Rapid Response http://www.rrms.com

Morgan,
Thanks for your input.  One problem we have is that the state of Georgia requires a low voltage security license and we hold a low voltage telecommunication license.  I am not prepared to take that test anytime soon.

Talk to the monitoring companies - they will hold that license in your state.  Many dealers overlook this opportunity thinking they have to get the license first - I still encourage you to take the steps to get it, but you can broker monitoring to one of the service providers in the meantime allowing you to retain the revenue and customer relationship.
