Reactions to California TV Ban

California just passed a ban on inefficient TVs starting in 2011. Has government intervention gone too far or is this something our country needs?

Here are the two sides: the CEA says the ban will hurt the economy and eliminate about 4,000 jobs in California; the CEC says the ban will save California residents money and save enough energy to power 864,000 single-family homes.

If you’re a California-based CE pro, how will this impact your business? If you’re a non-California-based CE pro, do you care?

We’re in California.  Margins on TV’s have been so bad already I don’t see this being a problem for us.  We do not have a retail store.  We will work on a project with existing equipment and customer provided hardware.

I do think we are WAY over legislated.  But this would not be on the top of my list of costly legislation.  Better stop there.

There is no way California can police out-of-state sales. Online retailers and neighboring states will see a huge increase of sales into California. The end result being the state will not have lessened energy consumption but they will experience a huge loss in sales tax revenue and jobs. It could even put some retailers out of business. This is about the most wrongheaded legislation I have ever seen.

Only goes to prove that overexposure to sunshine can damage the potential for clear thinking. Add that to the damage that steroids have done to the governor’s brain and you get legislation like this.

I’m certain there will be an impact on all television sets worldwide as this standard becomes in effect. The reason is, 1) no manufacturer is going to cut out California sales, and 2) Its rediculous to set up a factory to manufacture 5% of their TV’s with this kind of “Smog” control when all the rest of the world will not use it.  In other words, the manufacturers will either not market to California, or all their TVs will be made with the same compliance.

My only question is: Don’t the larger CRT TV’s (36” and above) still in use,  use much more current than the newer flat-panel sets? Does this mean these homeowners who have those sets have to pay a higher tax for using them?  And why the sudden concern about hi power consumption, when its been around for decades?

Manufacturers certainly have the option of ignoring the California mandates and encouraging Californians to simply shop in Nevada, Arizona, Oregon and online.

Instead of investing our valuable time and resources into fighting the inevitable (as goes California so goes the nation) maybe CEDIA and its members should practice what we preach about being “Green”.  CEDIA offers classes on how to make our business and installs more green and pushes bogus green initiatives like carbon offsets for our trips to Expo.  Now when legislation comes along that has real teeth in it we fight it?  That is a hypocritical position for CEDIA to take.  This legislation will not even effect the larger 58” and larger TVs that we tend to focus on anyway as an industry.  Vizio execs testified that it will not make any type of an impact on their business and I suspect it will not even be an issue when the time comes to comply with the rule years from now.

Green? I think the only thing that is green here is the funny-looking plant they are smoking here in California. There is so much hypocracy about this crazy movement that even those who believe in it are confused. The fact is, CO emmissions actually help the planet instead of hurting it. (But we cannot tell Mr. Gore that for he has too much money to lose). Bottom line is, we integrators will still sell large TV’s in California, even if they are “Front Projection Big Screens”.

This reminds me of and is similar to the Phosphate detergent bans in Washington state that happened earlier this year.
Some background: http://www.theeagle.com/nation/Spokane-residents-rebel-over-dish-detergent-ban
More recent follow up: http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2009/aug/16/dumping-less-catching-more/

Yes, there was some definite reactions against this at first, but in the end, there are long term benefits.  Manufacturers will adapt and change their products to suit the market.  If I recall, something similar happened w. laundry detergent back in the 70’s w. Phosphate as well.  Lots of griping at the beginning, but everyone eventually got over it..
