As Blu-ray.com reports, the AACS licensing authority has released the “Final Adopter Agreement” it plans to enforce against consumer electronics companies that make BluRay players (and any other AACS devices that come along). Buried inside that 188 page document is a plan to eliminate analog video… forever. BluRay device makers will have to restrict analog outputs to low resolution first:

2.2.2.1 Analog Sunset – 2010. With the exception of Existing Models,
any Licensed Player manufactured after December 31, 2010 shall
limit analog video outputs for Decrypted AACS Content to SD
Interlace Modes [composite video, s-video, 480i component video and 576i video] only.

I think the big problem with this isnt going to be old analog HDTVs but the VAST majority of video distribution systems installed today are using component video.  The main problem I have with this “transition”, is that HDMI is very limited when using it in a distributed video system, and its far from reliable!  Hopefully in the next year we will have some better solutions out there because my experience with HDMI so far has been far from encouraging!

Yep…and that’s exactly why I posted the info here in ‘Installation’.

Manufacturers are releasing -new- Distribution Systems utilizing Component inputs/outputs (and we’re buying them), yet I haven’t heard or seen one word about this, at least in the circles I run in.  Thankfully, I’m a member of EFF.org.

It doesn’t sound to me like the Mfgs. will be even allowed to build switchers, etc. with HDMI inputs/Component outputs that will output 720/1080.(?)
