Does anyone no of any research available (free or for purchase) that would indicate the importance of having a home theater in the home?  Any help would be appreciated.

Have you looked at CEDIA or CEA? I’m pretty sure CEA has reports available both for free and for purchase, and I would expect CEDIA to have it too.
