I am interested in using Netstreams Digilinx for a large project here in the UK. However, I am interested in using it as a distribution system (i.e. not using its media server) and I am keen to use RTI panels where necessary for control.

Can anyone give me comfort that it is reliable and well-supported by Netstreams with updates etc etc?

Hi Will,

Netstreams works VERY well for audio distribution.  You have a few options: 

1) use a MediaLinx or MediaLinx Pro to integrate “legacy” audio sources such as CD players, Tuners, satellite radio, etc.  This will convert the analog or digital audio output from your device to Internet Protocol (IP) audio stream which can be sent throughout the home, in addition it will enable RS-232 or IR control of the source.  Keep in mind that devices hooked up this way can only output one thing at a time.  You can listen to the source in any room, but if someone wants to listen to 95.5 FM and someone else wants to listen to 105.9 FM, someone is gonna be out of luck!  (unless you have 2 tuners installed!)

2) use NetStreams’ Streaming Music Manager.  Essentially a PC running Windows Embedded, this device will search your network for compatible audio files (.MP3 or .WAV) and make them available on the NetStreams network.  You can stream 5 simultaneous streams from the SMM to various zones, so the kids can be listening to their music, while Dad listens to his music in the study and the missus listens to yet another song in the bedroom.

3) you can use a 3rd party Media Server.  Escient, Audio ReQuest, and Naim media servers all work NATIVELY with Netstreams.  Simply plug the ethernet connection on the server into the Netstreams SwitchLinx and configure it in the Netstreams configuration software.  You will be able to stream 5 or 6 streams throughout the house (depending on the server used).  This is the EASIEST and MOST RELIABLE solution.

The main benefit to Netstreams IP technology is that everything is sent digitally over the network.  Unlike other solutions that are only hybrid IP solutions...sending control over IP and audio analog...netstreams is 100% IP, end to end.  The benefits in sound quality are huge!  Also, having the amplifier locally placed means better efficiency and less interference.  Overall, in my 12 years in the industry, I feel that this is the BEST SOUNDING distributed audio system available on the market today.  (even better if you use the SL254 with IP ready speakers!)

While the RTI panels work VERY well with Netstreams (they are a Netstreams Partner), I would really recommend using the Netstreams panels instead.  The big benefit is that the Netstreams panels will give you intercom functionality where the RTI panels will not.  Also they cost just a little bit less than the RTI for the 7” panel…

Just a few points to consider.
Great system for a large scale project.
I prefer Audio ReQuest servers over the SMM from personal experience.  Unless it will be loaded once and only uploaded by YOU.
The power supplies for the system have fans and create alot of noise so you may have to locate them with that in mind.
The company exceeds expectations to supporting the product. 
The tech support team is head and shoulders above the industry norm.
You can add to the system as you go.
You will spend more time connecting all the fittings then you will setting up and programming.
Budget your time accordingly.
You don’t have to use their touchscreens if you have a browser or touchscreen you really like.
Make notes or just write on the bags with the mac addresses of what goes where, then your matching in set up goes very smoothly.
Make that sale and blaze a trail with confidence that NetStreams will support you.
