Dr. Floyd E. Toole Wins CEDIA Lifetime Achievement Award
image
The Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association (CEDIA) has named Dr. Floyd E. Toole the recipient of its 2008 Lifetime Achievement Award.

Toole, honored at CEDIA's annual Electronics Lifestyles Awards Banquet, has been a pioneer in the acoustics industry for more than 40 years.

His research has focused on small-room acoustics and evaluating the relationship between technical measurements of audio equipment and listeners' perceptions.

Toole's findings have been applied to loudspeaker design and manufacturing.

Toole, now retired, is an acoustical consultant and contributor to CEDIA University. He was named on of CEDIA University's Top 10 Instructors in 2007.

Toole joined the National Research Council of Canada in 1965, reaching the position of senior research officer. He moved to Harman Research in 1991 as corporate vice president of acoustical engineering.

CEDIA also recently announced its Manufacturers' Excellence Awards.

SoundSense Offers Noise Cancellation Solutions at CEDIA Expo
acousticback
SoundSense will debut several noise cancellation solutions at its booth (453) at CEDIA Expo 2008.

The patent-pending NoiseOut Acoustic Speaker Back is an enclosure designed to maximize speaker performance by reducing noise transmission through speakers in walls and ceilings to keep noise out of other rooms.

The NoiseOut Acoustic Speaker Back comes completely constructed and ready to be installed as a single unit for both new construction and retrofit environments.

They are available in two standard sizes to address both ceiling and wall applications. Custom enclosures can also be ordered to fit any speaker size.

SoundSense says the materials used to create the speaker backs have been acoustically tested to reduce noise transmission between walls and floors.

Acoustic Chimney Reduces Low-Frequency Sound

The company will also unveil a new technology and design for an Acoustic Chimney that absorbs, filters and reduces low-frequency sound in home theaters.

Dolby, Audyssey Introduce Volume-Related Technologies
image
The words "custom" and "volume" aren't seen in the same sentence very often.

At the CEDIA Expo, however, Dolby and Audyssey are talking to custom dealers about volume. Both companies are touting different technologies that relate to how the listening experience is different at different levels.

Dolby is introducing Dolby Volume at the show, although dealers probably won't see it in products until 2008. The audio standard is designed to deliver a consistent TV listening experience by leveling the volume across channels and programs, says Christophe Chabanne, technical marketing manager, consumer electronics.

Demonstrating the technology, he presides over a demo in which he flips the channel from a program at a conventional listening level to a suddenly extremely loud Latin game show. The difference without Dolby Volume is astounding, but it's something with which most consumers are familiar.

Flipping the same channels with Dolby Volume, Chabanne demonstrates that there is much less contrast.
