Teaser: The Pros & Cons of Cloud Storage, Streaming

With cloud-based content all the rage – and with my forthcoming “cloud” session at CEDIA Expo 2011 – I asked one of my panelists to provide a teaser on some cloud-based storage and streaming services. This is just a glimpse of what you will hear from Michael de Nigris of Autonomic Controls, knower of all things content. He’ll join three integrators on the panel – one of whom will share his own tale of cutting the cable cord. -Julie Jacobson

Dealer: HDMI over IP is ‘Game Changing’

How would you like to distribute multiple HDMI streams over your home IP network? It seems you can do that with a new solution from Just Add Power.

At the CEDIA Expo 2009 I found the company tucked away at a tiny booth in the corner of Exhibit Hall B.

Their product? Projector Connector: a solution for HDMI matrix applications that leverages a managed network switch to distribute multiple HDMI sources to multiple displays.

Because it's all IP you don't have to worry about exceeding the ins and outs of a typical matrix switch; and that's good because the limited offering for large frame HDMI matrix switches has handicapped the entire industry for years.

Here's how it works: an encoder unit (VBS-HDMI-308A) converts the HDMI signal to IP packets. This information passes through a managed switch on a specified VLAN. A networked receiver unit (VBS-HDMI0108A) decodes the signal at the display device.

More on SpeakerCraft Nirv IP Multiroom A/V

SpeakerCraft still won't divulge everything about it's forthcoming Nirv IP-based multiroom A/V system. The product delivers audio, video, data, intercom and control signals simultaneously over a single Cat 5 cable.

Even so, SpeakerCraft director of engineering Jason Craze was kind enough to answer a few questions from Derek Flickinger, our friendly geek who was intrigued by the system.

Nirv will be shown at CEDIA Expo 2009 in Atlanta.

Craze's answers are vague but that's the best we could get from him ... for now.

Q. Did they develop their own IP-based audio technology or do they license someone else's?
A. Licensed, but with proprietary tweaks for our implementation. All partnerships will be revealed as we approach the show.

Latest on DVD Ripping: RealNetworks, Control4, Crestron, Kaleidescape

RealNetworks is causing quite a stir with a new DVD ripping program called RealDVD.

Big deal? The software appears to be the first from a studio-friendly, name-brand provider, and the company claims it is entirely legal.

From the RealDVD FAQ:

Is it legal to save movies with RealDVD?
Yes, provided that you are the owner of the original DVD and you use your saved copy solely for your personal use.

I'm not sure where this stipulation comes from – certainly not the DVD CCA (Copy Control Association), which licenses the decryption software to RealNetworks for DVD playback.

Even so, RealNetworks says it is abiding by the DVD CCA's licensing mandates because the ripped DVDs maintain their copy-protection wrapper (and, by the way, everything else about the DVDs including the extras).
