CEPro@CES
image
For decades, custom electronics integrators have relied on CES to get a pulse check on the future of video, audio, networks and other cutting edge consumer technologies.

CES is the place where CE Pros learn what their customers will be asking for six months later and make connections with the manufacturers that will help them deliver quality products and services.

CEPro@CES is designed to enhance the experience of custom electronics companies at CES.

CE Pro Exhibits at CES

You’ll find great suppliers like the PowerHouse Alliance, Millionaire Gallery, HAI by Leviton and Adrian Technology at the CE Pro at CES exhibit zone in the South Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center.

There are also hundreds of manufacturers, distributors and service providers that you’ll want to see in other parts of the convention center and at the Venetian Hotel ballroom and suites (be sure to visit the high performance audio exhibitors there).

Invasion of the CE Pro Blog Mob at CEDIA Expo 2012
image
There is only so much a handful of CE Pro editors can cover during CEDIA Expo, our industry's most important show.

This year we enlisted eight industry veterans to give us a hand, providing insights that only those in the trenches can provide.

Donning green armbands and black fedoras, these members of the CE Pro Blog Mob visited tons of booths, snapping photos and videos with their Lumix DMC-SZ1 cameras, generously provided by Panasonic.

Other vendors that rewarded these guest bloggers included:
  • Remote Technologies Inc., which donated the best tradeshow roller bags a blogger could ask for.
  • URC, which made custom backpacks for the "press" and provided top-notch RF remotes and other goodies for the whole gang
  • Monoprice, which pleasantly surprised the Mobsters with news they would be offering unbranded products for the trade
  • Denon, providing in-ear headphones/mic for the flight home
  • Lutron, which lavished the group with a number of lighting-control gifts

ADA Ramp Decodes Variety of Audio Formats from Multichannel to Two-channel
image
Richard Stoerger of Audio Design Associates (ADA) is arguably one of the most enthusiastic purveyors of audio systems in the CEDIA universe.

Here he discusses the Ramp-PM Room Amp which just won a CEDIA Manufacturers Excellence Award.

As he explains, flat panels of late have only a digital output, which could output different multichannel outputs.

“You could be flipping channels and have different decoding issues,” he says. “The Ramp decodes Dolby Digital and DTS for multichannel all the way down to two-channel.”

It's like a stereo system for any flat panel.

Knoll Intros Ultra-Flat IR Emitter that Can be Cut to Size
image
Knoll Systems introduced at CEDIA Expo 2012 an ultra-flat IR emitter embedded in a rubbery piece of material that you can bend and cut. Peel of the backing and stick it wherever you want.

"The best part is you can barely see it," says CE Pro Blog Mobster Joe Whitaker explains. "It's developed developed with that consumer in mind that absolutely hates an IR bug."

Knoll tells CE Pro that the price of this product should be competitive with traditional IR emitters on the market.

The "Cut-IR" can be manipulated to fit almost any application, as Blog Mobster David Hadded explains in this video.

Pakedge Debuts Networking Gear that Looks like A/V, IP Power, More
image
Pakedge, a leading provider of networking gear for custom integrators, introduced at CEDIA Expo 2012 a brand new line of wireless access points that are geared to give maximum distance without sacrificing performance.

I can say from experience in my personal system that these access points are another evolution in the networking space by a company already known for its prowess in the market.

Look for my forthcoming wireless shoot-out featuring Pakedge, Luxul and others in a forthcoming issue of CE Pro.

Xantech IR over IP

Xantech launched the XtraNet line of IR products that work over Ethernet, allowing for routing and controlling of remote devices over a home network. It does all sorts of things, including giving you the ability to control using old-fashioned IR repeaters, without having to rely on double-plugged emitters.

Features
The XtraNet XLIP200 is a basic IR input and output device that supports native IR I/O over wired networks, to which it interfaces via an RJ-45 connector, and is configured as an input by default. The XLIP400, configured by default as an output, adds support of up to 128 macros. These macros may be accessed via a web page from any computer, tablet, smartphone or similar smart device connected to the network. Alternatively, users may create personalized control pages for the iPhone or iPad using commercially available third party apps. The macros are configured as eight system-wide buttons plus four groups of 30 macro buttons that may be dedicated to specific devices…

SunBriteTV Marquee Displays Stare Directly at Sun
image
We've all been told since childhood, never stare at the sun. Heck, Bruce Springsteen famously wrote about it on his debut album (well, made more famous when Manfred Mann covered it), singing "Mama always told me not to look into the sights of the sun," on "Blinded by the Light" to kick off Greetings From Asbury Park.

Of course, he then added, "Oh but mama that's where the fun is" ... and that seems to be the take on the sun-staring matter from display manufacturer SunBriteTV, too.

Outdoor televisions face all sorts of pitfalls—weather, dust, bugs, erosion—and that's why there simply aren't many companies that dare make such all-weather displays. SunBriteTV has been at the forefront of the category, and showed the many reasons why during CEDIA Expo in Indianapolis.

The company has several little vignettes in its booth (#3111) featuring its outdoor models, like a homey fireplace and sofa area simulating an outdoor living room, a professional stadium…

Key Digital Reports ‘Thousands’ of Compass Control Sales
image
Integrators are usually very hesitant to embrace a new home automation control system. They don't want to be guinea pigs and deploy something new from a manufacturer that has just entered the market, only to get stuck having to remove and replace the system if the newbie supplier disappears.

But Key Digital, a longtime vendor in the video distribution and connectivity market, appears to have put integrators at ease with its new Compass Control system. Indeed, company president and CEO Mike Tsinberg reports that "thousands of units have shipped" in just a few short months since the product hit the market in June 2012 as dealers feel comfortable trying the new system because of Key Digital's 21-year history in the industry. Many of those shipped units have gone to AVAD, the exclusive distributor of the product, so it's hard to determine how many systems have actually been installed at this point, Tsinberg admits.

"It's…
