Control4’s HC-1000 is Uber-Powerful GHz-Speed Home Control Processor

Control4 is coming out with its most powerful home-control processor by far. The company's new HC-1000, debuting at CEDIA, "is an extremely fast processor that will rival anything in the market in terms of overall system performance," claims CEO Will West. "In fact, it exceeds anything we know in the market in terms of raw processing power. … Processors in most of the embedded systems are typically less than 300 MHz. We're into the gigahertz range."
The product is less of a controller, and more of a supplement to Control4's suite of control systems and interfaces. There is no ZigBee wireless radio built in. The only connectors are a USB port and an Ethernet port. "Rather than a multitasking box, it is pure hard core," says West. "It runs Director [automation software] and that's it. It allows the rest of the house to do what it needs to do."
The product also includes on-board storage -- 250 GB in the first version, but expanding…

NuVo Music Touch Pads Can Now Control Lights, Appliances, Security Systems…

Providers of multiroom audio systems have some of the best-looking, user-friendly, affordable keypads in the industry. The problem is that they're good for just one thing: controlling music. What a waste of perfectly good real estate.
Why not use them to control other systems in the house like lights, thermostats and a complete home automation system?
Now you can, with a new software-based solution from NuVo, maker of affordable whole-house music systems. In theory, NuVo Control Pads will be able to operate virtually any third-party control system that connects to the company's Grand Concerto multiroom audio system.
All menus and all navigation programmed into the third-party controller can be accessed through the keypads. That means NuVo can even control additional sources and devices that are connected to the main third-party system. "You can control it all," says project design engineer Pete Maley. "You don't have to connect [NuVo] to all the sources."
Maley says the work on the…

Elan Intros Larger Ole, Streamlined Interfaces

Elan Home Systems is bringing out a new Ole touchpad that is twice is good as the original.
Introduced last year, Ole has been one of Elan's most successful launches. The interface has a small LCD screen, surrounded by virtual buttons embedded on a static, decorative display. Elan calls it a "Film Interactive Touchpad" or FIT.
At CEDIA, Elan will introduce a larger Ole, the Ole XL (extra large), featuring an OLED display that is twice as big as the original. "You only have to toggle through three screens to see all of the sources," Moore says. The display also provides more text-based metadata (8 lines x 20 characters) than the smaller version.
Moore adds that the larger screen provides higher resolution and allows larger icons than its predecessor.
The Ole XL fits in the same backbox as the original Ole--great for upgrades.
More VIA!

Colorado vNet Adds Security, Climate, Camera Control to Lighting & Audio System

Colorado vNet started out doing lighting control systems, and then added digital multiroom audio to the mix. After the company integrated lighting and audio controls in a single touchscreen solution called Vibe, we surmised that energy management and security couldn't be far behind.
Indeed, vNet will show in September a new controller for interfacing with third-party thermostats and security systems.
Out of the gate, the company will support Aprilaire thermostats and Honeywell Vista security panels.
"It's something we've been getting a lot of requests for," says director of sales and marketing Ben Beierwaltes. "People who have been so in love with our system really wanted to offer a full solution."
Currently, each of the four subsystems (audio, lighting, security, energy) is controlled independently. You cannot create macros that span multiple disciplines (e.g., a HOME scene triggers the security system to disarm, the…
