ZyXEL Enters IP Camera Surveillance Market

ZyXEL Communications has launched into the IP camera surveillance market with two CloudEnabled Iow-cost security cameras.

ZyXEL Communications, known for its broadband equipment including wireless HD transmission systems, has become the latest manufacturer to leap into the residential camera surveillance market.

ZyXEL has launched its CloudEnabled series of web cameras, the IPC3605N and IPC4605N. The cameras feature cloud-based technology that eliminates traditional installation processes and access difficulties inherent in previous generations of these devices. The webcams provide accessibility to video feeds via any PC, iPhone or Android device.

The IPC3605N and IPC4605N are designed to blend in with the decor of a home. Both incorporate 802.11n wireless technology, audio monitoring and 720p video, which ZyXEL claims provides enhanced visual clarity over traditional 640x480 network cameras.

The units offer h.264 video encoding to save bandwidth without compromising video quality. For low-light conditions, ZyXEL's webcams deliver an array of Infrared LEDs that automatically illuminate dark areas up to 15 feet. The IPC4605N's Pan-Tilt-Zoom functionality allows the user to pan the camera up to 340 degrees, and tilt it up to 100 degrees.

"Previously, IP cameras demanded complicated configurations, requiring users to make significant changes to their router. These configurations included port forwarding to a specific port that was popular among developers, so the port was often already dedicated to another application. Or, the solutions relied on UPnP, which was often disabled by the service operators," said Steven Joe, executive vice president of channel business for Americas at ZyXEL. "Our cameras solve these obstacles with cloud software that only requires the device to be registered."

ZyXEL offers a free suite of apps for PCs and mobile devices running Apple's iOS or Android for fast and easy remote access. Users register their cameras online and download the app, and can access video feeds via a connected device. ZyXEL also provides camera management and sharing capabilities, so multiple video feeds can be securely shared or so users can monitor their kids, pets or the elderly.

The IPC3605N and IPC4605N will be available in February 2012. The IPC3605N will have an MSRP of $99, while the IPC4605N, with additional Pan-Tilt-Zoom feature, will carry a street price of $185.
