TV Shipments Fall 6%, Revenues 12% in Q1, Research Shows
DisplaySearch says LCD units up 27%, but revenues fall; Samsung tops brands.
Global TV revenues fell 12 percent year-over-year in the first quarter of 2009 to $22.1 billion, with total shipments down 6 percent to 43.3 million units, according to new research.
DisplaySearch's "Quarterly Global TV Shipment and Forecast Report" finds that LCD TVs actually gained global share in Q1, up to 26.7 million units shipped (a growth of 27 percent), but revenues fell year-over-year by 1 percent.
Plasma shipments were up 1 percent year-over-year, but revenues fell 26 percent over the same time period. Their total representation in the display market was 11 percent of revenues and 6 percent of unit shipments.
Samsung kept their leadership position in TV revenue share, at 21.5 percent, with LG, Sony, Sharp and Panasonic following in that order.
China continued to be the number one region for TV shipments, increasing to 21.3 percent from 19.1 percent, while North America led in global revenues, with 27 percent.
As for screen sizes, 32 inches remained the most popular (with 38 percent of units shipped). 1080p models increased their unit share to a record 21.7 percent.
