Turn Your iPhone into a Windows SideShow-Enabled Device
Ikanos Consulting's Go Gadgets technology grants iPhones access to SideShow "gadgets" such as Outlook and home automation.
The Apple iPhone and iPod Touch can now be turned into Windows SideShow devices, thanks to new Go Gadgets technology from Ikanos Consulting.
SideShow is a technology built into Windows Vista that allows “auxiliary displays,” such as remote controls, to access PC applications. Developers write “gadgets” for the applications to enable access through these small displays. For example, Microsoft wrote an Outlook gadget so you can pull up your calendar without booting up your PC.
Last year at CES, home automation developer Lagotek showed gadgets for its HIP automation system. Any SideShow-enabled device that can communicate with the Vista PC -- where the gadgets reside -- could pull up HIP automation scenes such as “GOODNIGHT.”
In fact, Lagotek will be hosting Ikanos in its CES booth this year, demonstrating how the SideShow-enabled iPhone can control a home, via gadgets written for the HIP automation system.
The press release is a little misleading, claiming, “This is the first technology that enables the use of iPhone and iPod touch for home control over WiFi and GPRS/EDGE.” In fact, several home automation vendors – most notably Savant Systems – offer iPhone software that provides an even richer automation interface than SideShow can offer.
Lagotek and Ikanos, however, may very well be the first to show a SideShow-enabled iPhone. “Our friends at Ikanos Consulting are amazing and, working together, we can achieve in weeks what Microsoft and Apple would never be able to bring to the market,” says Lagotek CEO Eugene Luskin. Last year at CES, a slew of companies showed SideShow-enabled devices (all Bluetooth) just as Steve Jobs was introducing the iPhone at MacWorld.
Go Gadgets is a client-server system for adding Windows SideShow capability to a wide range of connected smart devices. Go Gadgets also supports devices based on Windows Mobile, Windows CE, and J2ME, and allows remote access to Windows SideShow gadgets via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or GPRS/EDGE/3G.
Lagotek is exhibiting in CES South Hall 1, booth #20419.
