Sony VPL-VW1000ES 4K Projector Puts 1080p to Shame

Sony unveiled its 4K VPL-VW1000ES Projector at CEDIA Expo 2011, featuring four times the number of pixels than 1080p projectors. Sony says the projector’s 2000 ANSI lumens of brightness makes it suitable for screen sizes of up to 200 inches.

So if 1080p isn’t good enough for your clients, check this out. 4K in a Sony home theater projector is coming soon, but that stunning 4096 x 2160-pixel resolution will be costly.

The VPL-VW1000ES, shown at the CEDIA Expo 2011 is expected to be available in December for under $25,000.

Sony says its 4K system offers four times the number of pixels than 1080p projectors, and is intended for clients who want really big screen action up close and personal. Sony says the projector’s 2000 ANSI lumens of brightness, twice the output of Sony’s previous projectors, makes it suitable for screen sizes of up to 200 inches.

“Consumers are sitting much closer to larger screens as ever before, and with this they can see much more detail,” says Mike Abary, senior vice president of Sony Electronics’ home division.

The VW1000ES model also employs an entirely new SXRD 4K panel, which produces deep black levels. Ridiculous specs abound, such as the 1,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio when combined with Sony’s Iris3 technology. The VW1000ES projector also features an exclusive 4K "upscaler" to enhance all content - SD, HD, 2D, 3D - to 4K playback, even from existing media libraries. For greater versatility, it can also display Full HD 3D movies, as well as 2D and 3D anamorphic films. For Full 4K 3D, an integrated IR transmitter drives the projector’s TDG-PJ1 active shutter 3D glasses.

Installation options include dual triggers, a 2.1 motorized zoom, expanded throw distances, an RS-232 interface, control over IP and compatibility with leading home automation systems.
Sony says this 4K projector is just the first in a line of 4K products it will produce.

New ES Receivers
Sony also showed new ES line STR-DA5700ES and STR-DA3700ES AV receivers incorporating Faroujda 1080p upscaling and a variety of networking options, including built-in apps for both iOS and Android devices, as well as streaming options from Sony Entertainment Network, Netflix, YouTube, Pandora and other content providers. Furthermore, the STR-DA5700ES supports a variety of audio codecs, including DTS Neo X, offers automatic phase matching and speaker relocation technologies, and delivers DLNA client capability.

Maybe Sony can provide me a few bulbs for the Qualia projector that my clients paid $25,000 and are very difficult to find…even from Sony.  Maybe supporting older products would be a good first step in keeping dealers. I and few clients care about the beloved Sony name anymore.
