Robots Rock CES 2012, And We Don’t Mean Justin Bieber
Tosy demos robotic sketch artist, Xybotyx shows mobile iPod video dock, and the Robotics Zone preps for Justin Bieber's appearance.
Tosy SketBot draws pictures at CES 2012
By now, you probably know Tosy by the pre-show press surrounding Justin Bieber, who will appear today at the Tosy booth from 1:00 to 3:00 pm in the Robotics TechZone at CES 2012 (South Hall, lower level, around 21964).
But you should get to know Tosy by some of the cool robotics that the Vietnamese company makes. During CES, Tosy demonstrated the SketRobo, which reportedly can teach kids how to draw but really it’s just a cool toy.
The little fella sits in a chair and draws whatever you ask. It utilizes face-recognition and motion detection technology to “create life-like portraits with stunning details.” But I only got to see him draw an octopus. Still … very cool.
Also in the Robotics Zone, which is run by CE Pro parent company EH Publishing, we spied a rambling robot that is smarter and way more fun than the Roomba. The Xybot from Xybotyx is a mobile dock for an iPhone/iPod that can be controlled by another iOS device (image below).
It can snap pictures or shoot video along the way both from the iPhone itself and from a camera mounted on the Xybot itself – particularly useful if you suspect there may be a bomb in your house.
The companion software includes video analytics for sensing motion and for getting a lay of the land – the unit remembers the floor plan so you can “send it on patrol” if you want, says Xybotyx’s Giovanni Joy.
It also has facial recognition capabilities and it even remembers faces so you can tell it, for example, “Go find Rover the dog.”
Integrate it with your iPod’s flashlight app and send the Xybot around the home when you’re out of town to give the place a lived-in look.
The Xybot will ship Feb. 20 and retail for $111.
Our favorite robot from 2012, the Makerbot 3D printer for consumers, is upstairs in the South Hall, and always worth a look.

Should CE pros be reselling these robots as add-on products for their clients or is it a pure retail play?
