The number of Energy Star-qualified RCA A/V products has tripled, according to parent company Thomson Audio/Video. RCA Bookshelf Audio Systems, DVD players and home theater audio systems are now more energy efficient by qualifiying for the Energy Star mark of efficiency.

"We know that consumers are looking for energy-efficient products that work well," says Dan Collishaw, Thomson's Audio/Video COO, in a statement. "According to the Department of Energy, 40 percent of electricity used to power home electronics is consumed while the products are turned off. Using Energy Star products not only saves on power, but helps prevent air pollution and offers a considerable amount of savings on home energy bills."

The company will also make smaller, environmentally-friendly paper gift box containers to replace the current plastic packaging, which they expect will help save more than 450 tons of plastic.

Thomson plans to increase the energy efficiency of more of its products, the company says in a press release.

The products currently bearing the Energy Star mark include:

RCA Bookshelf Audio Systems
RCA RS2664
RCA RS2130i
RCA RS2135i

RCA DVD Players
RCA DRC260
RCA DRC290
RCA DRC285

RCA Home Theater Audio Systems
RCA RT2770
RCA RTD217
