Price Index of 50-inch LCDs Drops 6%, PriceSCAN Says
Sharp's price index falls the most of LCD manufacturers since the beginning of October at 12 percent.
The price index for 50-inch LCDs has dropped 6 percent since the start of October, according to PriceSCAN.
PriceSCAN says the index for Sharp LCDs has fallen 12 percent over that period, the largest decline of any of its competitors.
"In an LCD market that's showing rapid overall price deterioration, it appears some brands are being marked down more quickly so as to preserve a competitive position at the low end of the price range," says PriceSCAN co-CEO and chief economist Jeff Trester.
"The greater price cuts for Sharp screens may be an example of getting ahead of the curve, and a harbinger of things to come for LCDs in general."
Flat-panel TV shipments increased in the third quarter to more than 10 million units, according to DisplaySearch. Sharp actually had the strongest quarter-to-quarter growth at 41 percent, picking up more than 2 points of unit share to 9.0 percent.
Shipments of HDTVs have surpassed that of SDTVs for the first time and more than one-third of households in the United States have at least one HDTV. This has obviously been helped by the slow economy, which has forced many manufacturers to slash prices and outsource more LCD production.
iSuppli says LCD TVs will become the largest CE market by 2012 with sales hitting $110.8 billion.
