Planar Shows Why We Need 4K Ultra HD at ISE 2013
Planar 84-inch 4K Ultra HD display at ISE 2013
We first spied the 84-inch 4K edge-lit LED display at CEDIA Expo last September – demonstrated by Runco, Planar’s residential counterpart.
Now at ISE, the display is in its rightful place at the Planar booth. While canned content of pretty ladies with flowery dresses was being demo’d, product manager Yannick Nicol cranked out the good stuff for me – a 3D rendering of something big and orange and scientific looking (see video).
This display—Planar calls it UltraRes—has got to be an engineer’s dream.

While most of us residential folk complain about a lack of 4k content, it’s clear the commercial world will be generating its own.
Nicol sees it in all sorts of applications – medical, engineering, architecture, command and control ….
In fact, he pointed to a multi-screen command-and-control demonstration elsewhere in the Planar booth, and suggested that the 84-inch 4K display would be well suited as a secondary display.
“You can see maps and traffic on the big wall,” he said, “and use the smaller version in an office where you don’t have the space but still need a lot of information.”
Nicol declined to name a price for the display but says it will ship in about two months.
