With the Blu-ray/HD DVD format war still going strong, upconverting DVD players are becoming an increasingly popular category for custom installers who don't want to sell their clients on either high-def format.
Oppo's DV-981HD is a full-featured DVD player that will leave your most discerning customers happy.
Featuring Faroudja's Directional Correlation Deinterlacing (DCDi) technology, the DV-981HD outputs up to a 1080p resolution over HDMI and supports Super Audio CD (SACD), DVD-Audio and DivX formats.
Setup is pretty much non-existent. Plug in the power and plug in the HDMI cable. The player can output 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p over the HDMI port.
The DV-981HD also has composite and S-Video outputs, but not component video out.
The player, with Dolby Digital, DTS and Dolby Pro-Logic II support, offers seven EQ settings and seven sound fields for the type of content being played and environment. Digital audio can be output via optical, coaxial and HDMI.
The video performance of the DV-981HD is awesome. Although HD purists will be able to tell that the content isn't actually high-definition, the DV-981HD provides the best near-HD picture I've ever seen.
While many upconverting DVD players bloat and stretch the characters on screen, the DV-981HD smoothly transforms standard-definition DVDs into the closest thing you'll get to Blu-ray or HD DVD.
Even looking at the screen up-close didn't reveal any pixelation, something that most upconverting DVD players show.
The Oppo player's remote is a full-featured controller, offering quick access to bookmarks, HDMI output and subtitles in addition to the normal functionality that you'd expect.
One of the neater functions of the DV-981HD is the ability to adjust the lights on the front of the player. If the system is a little too bright for your viewing environment, there are four levels for displaying the on-screen information.
The price of the DV-981HD is only $229, so the margins aren't as appealing as something like Cary Audio's DVD-7 (which rings in around $4,000).
As a high-performance, budget-friendly upconverting DVD player, Oppo's DV-981HD rocks.
