MK Sound Regaining Momentum in U.S.

After nearly fading into obscurity, speaker manufacturer MK Sound has reemerged with approximately 60 dealers.

MK Sound’s LCR-750 product is a two-way design that is THX Select certified, and it has been a popular product choice for electronics professionals building home theater systems.

It's been a rollercoaster five years for Miller & Kreisel (M&K).

The speaker manufacturer closed it doors on Feb. 22, 2007, shocking the consumer electronics market. Abt Electronics, which at the time was the second-largest M&K dealer in the country, picked up distribution of M&K, which is now called MK Sound, through the Dolphin Group.

Following a series of moves that streamlined MK's operations, MK and the Dolphin Group parted ways. With the brand gaining momentum in the U.S., MK opened an L.A.-based office that co-owner Asger Bak says has been a key development because it enables MK to serve its growing dealer base in a competitive market.

"In a struggling market, we feel that a more direct channel to our retail representation will enhance the brand's profile going forward," Bak explains. "Although MK Sound has moved our business headquarters and product development to Denmark, Los Angeles will remain the company's U.S. base with warehousing, spare parts and other key services."

MK Sound says another part of its effort to rebuild the brand is the improvement of communication with dealers. "Having our own U.S. organization in place simply means more control, more direct contact and the opportunity for focused investment in growth and success," Bak notes.

"As a dealer of MK products for over 20 years, I can attest to the level of detail and quality of this wonderful loudspeaker product [line]," says David Lafferman, senior buyer for Bjorns Audio Designs. "Quality is an overused term today, however, I feel I am justified in saying so. When the everyday consumer can purchase basically the same products found in movie studios and mastering rooms worldwide, that speaks for itself. I am also overwhelmed with the level of service MK Sound provides to the dealer."

Heading into 2012, MK Sound will fulfill dealer requests for an architectural subwoofer by introducing an in-wall subwoofer that uses dual 8-inch woofers and back box options. MK will also introduce replacement products called the X Series for its MX subwoofer line. The X Series will include the X8, X10 and X12 subwoofers, which will include MK's dual-driver, push/pull driver configuration.
