MDU Starts Up 25%; Overall Housing Surges 9.3%
Led by MDUs, U.S. housing starts rose to the highest level in 19 months in November. What are integrators doing to bring smaller, portable systems to MDU buyers?
Housing starts rose to their highest level since April 2010, led by multidwelling units (MDUs), according to data from the U.S. Commerce Department.
The 9.3 percent increase in November adds up to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 685,000 from October, according to the Wall St. Journal.
MDUs led the way, jumping a whopping 25.3 percent. Single-family construction rose only 2.3 percent.
Because the housing market is still volatile, not as many people want to buy homes, instead opting to rent. Thus, the jump in MDUs.
For integrators, it begs the question: what are you doing to reach apartment dwellers, condo owners with smaller, portable systems?
Compared to November 2010, new-home starts in November are up 24.3 percent, albeit still way below the days of 2006. Meanwhile, newly issued building permits were up 5.7 percent from October 2011 to an annual rate of 681,000, the highest since March 2010. Also, new-home sales are 8.9 percent above their level in October 2010.
According to the Journal, the data showed housing starts surged 53.8 percent in the Northeast and 22.6 percent in the West and rose 4.1 percent in the South. They fell 18.2 percent in the Midwest.
