LCDs May Contribute to Global Warming, Study Says

Study says chemical in LCDs is 17,000 times stronger than carbon dioxide and is a "missing greenhouse gas."

lcdglobalwarming
A chemical used to produce LCDs may be causing global warming, according to a report published in Geophysical Research Letters.

Michael Prather, an atmospheric chemist who co-authored the report, is calling Nitrogen trifluoride (NF3) a "missing greenhouse gas," saying the chemical could double to 8,000 metric tons in 2009.

NF3 is used in chemical vapor deposition to make LCDs, semiconductors and synthetic diamond.

This isn't the first time the energy usage of LCDs has sparked controversy. Government officials in Australia and England considered banning LCDs altogether last year.

The Kyoto Protocol, an international climate change treaty, doesn't include NF3. When the agreement was reached in 1997, NF3 wasn't being mass produced.

The report says NF3 is 17,000 times stronger than carbon dioxide.

Not that this would occur, but if all the NF3 made this year was released into the air, the warming effect would emulate 67 million tons of carbon dioxide, the study found.

A recent DisplaySearch study says shipments of LCDs increased 69 percent year-to-year and don't show signs of slowing down.

I’m guessing that providing the gasses dont leak and are disposed of properly, this might not be an issue?

I know when old refrigerators are disposed of in certain countries, the freon gas is first pumped out of them before they go to land fill. This gas could be recycled to new LCD panels?

Also, LCD TV’s take up so much less room in landfills and weigh much less to freight so not all is so gloomy I guess.

Just my thoughts but I’m no expert.

This is a really poor article.  It tells us nothing.  Is the gas used in the production process, or is it in the finished LCD panel.  I’m pretty sure it’s just used in the process.  Is it released as part of the process? It certainly has nothing to do with the energy consumpetion of LCDs, as was mentioned in the article.  Give us info we can use, instrad of just filling up page space…

1 point for the Pdp commission, 1000 points to the LCD association..

Any chance the PDP group paid big bucks to find something like on LCD! lol….

I wonder how many metric tons of carbon dioxide is “leaked” into the atmosphere by humans just exhaling?

Reading this may contribute to global warming.

Try re-wording your article to government officials in the UK as there is no English only.

As for global warming…The Earth is healing itself and latest scientific research shows this.  Humans are arrogant to assume we can change anything and it should be mentioned that almost half of the emissions come from farm animals letting off wind…Do you propose banning farm animals.

I believe as far as the UK goes Global Warming is an excuse to raise stealth taxes.

While 67 million tons of CO2 is significant, it is sort of a drop in the bucket, and wildly inaccurate to say that LCD manufacture is thus “causing” global warming. World human-caused CO2 emissions = 27 BILLION metric tons per year, and US per capita CO2 emissions = 20,000 tons per individual.

Theus even if the entire “NF3” stock used in LCD manufacture were released, this would be the equivalent of only 3,350 Americans annual CO2 emissions.

I think Al Gore wrote this article to further fill his pockets with your money.

Wow, FoxyMulder and RW are two dumb F**ks.

Sure, there is no global warming but there is a Santa Clause right?
Get your arses out of your caves. EVEN if we are wrong about global warming, what harm is there to have big cities smog free in the future because we are driving gas free cars etc. This is one scare that can’t do harm to listen too unless you live in the middle east as an oil tycoon. May they R.I.P.

Is this #### ever going to end?  Virtually everything we in America do now and especially ALL things upper class and the rich can afford is ‘known’ to case global warming.  Does anyone actually believe this bullshit?  I just found out global warming is now increasing terrorism the other day.  The list of how far these idiots will take this global warming bs is amazing.  Its all a power struggle and you people who write this crap are just helping Gore and his buddies.

I’m blaming every single negative action I do from now on on global warming.  I missed a meeting? Global warming.  I slept with you sister?  Global warming caused that dont blame me.

Hey, I live in Toronto that has only benefited from global warming so to the dumb, uneducated, cave dwelling Americans (and Canadians) who dont want to listen simply because they are tired of hearing about it (poor things) then go ahead. We dont get huge storms and tornados and we have our own produce and LOTS of water. Just dont come up here when things get bad down there.
BTW, Hope you dont have children since Im sure they will love your comments in 50 years when they take a trip to NYC using a canoe to get around Manhattan becuase daddy had to have his SUV. hehe
Bring it on baby!

Taz,
It’s very ignorant of you to assume that any one who questions so call “global warming” is supporting polluting/destroying our environment. Maybe people are just tired of being told what they need to do by hypocrites who use junk science and ignore any other findings that don’t support their agenda. It’s also funny how you state your opinion as if it where fact. When clearly RW only stated his opinion and FoxyMulder used some facts in his opinion.

Posted by Taz  on  07/09  at  11:09 AM

Wow, the biggest ignorant award goes to “PE”.
So, I guess thousounds of scientists around the world are wrong and your Bush government is right? LMAO!!

Do you get much air in your cave?

Junk science? Sounds like a bible thumper’s line! hehe

Im done with this thread now…You guys are wasting my time so I wont read anymore on this thread now. grin

Once again you’re jumping to conclusions about my political and religious beliefs with out any facts. Your propaganda added nothing valuable to this. All you have to comment about is people being in caves. Facts all pointing to you having a one track mind and cannot think for you self.

P.S. Chances are this thread is in your Inbox. wink
