Audiophile integrator Dallas Dingle of Supercalibrations in the Twin Cities of Minnesota has a pair of 50-year-old Acoustic Research AR3 loudspeakers that he wants to give away to a loving home.
He inherited the iconic speakers a few years ago and wants to spread the love to a discriminating listener. They'd be pretty onerous to ship, but if you live anywhere near the Twin Cities and you write a really compelling story on why you want these gems, Dingle will let you take them home.
He writes on Facebook:
My brother in law Tom passed away several years ago. He had purchased a brand new set of AR (Acoustic Research) 3s while in serving in the army as a physician during the Vietnam war. So they are around 50 years old! Many people felt these 3 way loudspeakers were state of the art in those days.
At some point they needed repair so when I saw an article on how to update your ARs and suggested the upgrade to Tom, he agreed.
My friend Dave Olson completed the updates which included a new crossover,mid-range driver and tweeter. The woofer is original. They sound really nice! The cabinets are in good condition with a few scratches.
I am now looking for a new home for them, so the contest will be to convince me why you should own these classics? Perhaps show me the room where they would be installed? Or what other equipment would be used with them. Or what would be the first song you would play on them?
The contest will run until September 1st at which point I will pick a winner. The winner should plan on picking them up here in White Bear Lake as they are pretty heavy for shipping. Enter the contest by sending an email to [email protected]
P.S. The updates make the speaker sound better than original (IMHO),but takes away from the value of the speakers as collectible. As mentioned looking for someone who will appreciate the sound quality combined with the cool old school looks and actually spend time listening to them!
