At last, at last, wireless HD is now shipping from Gefen.

The company is now selling its "Wireless for HDMI" transmitter and receiver for $999 retail.

The solution is based on technology from Tzero, which uses Ultra Wideband (UWB) as its basis.

Wireless HD products – promised for two years from a variety of vendors – has been plagued with delays due to the cost of technology and technical challenges.

But I surmised in my 2009 "6 Trends" story that this would be the year of wireless HD. Indeed, it's the theme of CES 2009, where dozens of manufacturers are touting wireless HD products based on technology from Tzero, Amimon, Wireless HD (Sibeam), Sigma, various versions of 802.11, and proprietary solutions from Hitachi and others.

This is just the first wireless HD product expected from Gefen, and it's good for distances of about 30 feet line-of-sight (less if going through a wall to an adjacent room). The unit supports resolutions of up to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

In the future, Gefen will ship an alternative wireless HD product based on 5 GHz technology from Amimon.

Both products claim to deliver uncompressed audio with 1080p resolutions. Amimon is touted as a whole-house solution, but loses some of its resolution at longer distances.

A spokesperson at the Gefen booth says the Amimon product will "probably cost less" than the Tzero product. A ship dates was not disclosed.

Stay tuned for more wireless HD news from CES 2009.
