Do Women Seriously Want CE for Valentine’s Day?
CEA research indicates 61% of women are involved in the CE buying process. But does that mean they want a laptop from their love on Valentine's day?
Isn’t it romantic ...?
Touting its new report on gender and technology, the Consumer Electronics Association proclaims, “Tip for Valentine’s Day: Women Want Electronics.”
I’m skeptical. Isn’t that like the National Fishing Association declaring, “Women want lures for Valentine’s Day”?
In the CEA’s new study, “Women and CE,” the organization finds eight in 10 women “expressing an interest” in CE products, with 41% of those saying they are “very interested” in CE. That’s an increase of 10 percentage points over the previous study in 2007.
But does an interest in CE mean a woman wants a Blu-ray player or GPS for Valentine’s Day? Christmas, maybe. Birthday, maybe. But Valentine’s Day?

We don’t “do” Valentine’s Day or birthdays or any of that nonsense in our household, but if we did I’d probably want something romantic like sweat pants or a decent haircut or a handy satchel for my Frisbees. (I’d be more likely to get the aforementioned fishing lures, however.)
“This Valentine’s Day, the way to a woman’s heart just might be through electronics,” says Jessica Boothe, CEA manager of strategic research, who oversaw this study.
It may be true, as CEA notes, that 61% of women initiate or are involved in the process of buying consumer electronics. But I’m not sure that translates into a lady’s desire for a laptop from her love on February 14.
My advice to guys? Don’t pretend that the new HDTV is for her. Own up to it, and take your sweetheart to dinner or buy her a pretty broach or something for Valentine’s Day.
