CEDIA Expo Draws Nearly 17K Attendees, 15% First-Timers

CEDIA Expo 2012 in Indianapolis drew 16,900 total attendance, a slight 3.9% drop from last year's 17,600, but included 15% who attended the tradeshow for the first time.

Quality attendees -- who are more focused on education and in making their integration firm's purchasing decisions these days -- continues to be a key mantra of CEDIA Expo 2012, which drew 16,900 total attendees to last week's tradeshow in Indianapolis, Ind., according to the association.

That's a decline of 3.9 percent from last year's reported 17,600 attendees to the Expo, also held in Indianapolis following a two-year stint in Atlanta. Last year's attendance, however, was a 15 percent dropoff from 2010. CEDIA notes that this year's attendance represented 71 countries, and included a robust 15 percent that went to the show for the first time.

Discussions with manufacturers throughout the week seemed to underscore CEDIA's research that 80 percent of the integrator registrants "specified that they were responsible for final approval or making recommendations in their company’s buying decisions," according to the association. Many executives of the more than 450 exhibitors -- up from 444 a year ago -- echoed the sentiment that booth traffic, while inconsistent at times, featured more in-depth discussions with integrators this year due to the high-level responsibilities of attendees.

“The dealers that are here are better educated than I’m used to seeing," says Digital Projection director of marketing Michael Bridwell. "I’ve definitely noticed a higher caliber of dealers. Instead of spending time introducing our brand, they’re already familiar with how projectors work, and come with specific application questions." That would bode well for the 12 percent growth figure forecast in CEDIA's Benchmarking Survey that the association revealed last month.

CEDIA reports that non-exhibitor attendance for the Expo rose 4 percent, and that of the exhibitor attendance 90 of the exhibiting manufacturers were new this year.

“Our booth traffic has been outstanding,” said first-time exhibitor, Rob Fisher, vice president of marketing for ME Products, which saw plenty of interest in its Super Rod wire pullers that had previously targeted mainly electricians. “We see this market as a growth opportunity for our company and I would recommend anyone who wants to break into this market to look at doing this show. It offers tremendous value not only in opportunities to connect with the right people but also in the variety of marketing opportunities offered through the show.”

Attendees took advantage of 175 manufacturer trainings and industry education courses, including 22 new advanced IP networking tracks, which CEDIA reports all sold out. The association also introduced its new credential, Residential Networking Specialist, to reflect the growing impact of IT in the residential and light commercial A/V and automation spaces.

“I focused on attending as many courses as I could,” says Aaron Hemp, owner of IT firm INC Systems in Swartz Creek, Mich. “It was fascinating and encouraging to learn about all of the new technologies and where the industry is headed.”

As a nod to where the industry is headed, there were often long lines for guided tours of the CEDIA Expo's Future Technology Pavilion, plus the a standing-room-only crowd to hear the opening keynote presentation given by theoretical physicist and author Dr. Michio Kaku.

Next year CEDIA Expo is returning to Denver -- where it was held from 2006-08 -- and is scheduled for the end of September rather than its usual position right after Labor Day. The 2013 edition will be Sept. 25-28, with the tradeshow floor open Sept. 26-28.
