CEA Inducts 11 into Hall of Fame; Names Eliza Dushku Ambassador for 2012 CES
With the addition of 11 new inductees to its Hall of Fame, the CEA has now singled out nearly 160 industry members as elite contributors to the consumer electronics industry.
The CEA has named TV and movie star Eliza Dushku as its 2012 CES Entertainment Matters Program Ambassador.
The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) recently inducted 11 industry leaders into its Hall of Fame. The 11 inductees joined an elite group of 159 inventors, engineers, retailers, journalists and entrepreneurs that have been inducted since 2000 to represent the best qualities of the consumer electronics (CE) industry.
“The success of our industry is built upon the technologies and products these leaders created," CEA president and CEO Gary Shapiro said during the Consumer Electronics Association’s (CEA) Industry Forum in San Diego. "Our products have a powerful impact on the world and I am proud to be part of this strong tradition of innovation that continues to contribute to the economy today."
Here are the new members of the 2011 CE Hall of Fame in the categories in which they were inducted:
Innovators/Technologies
Ralph Baer: Developed the Brown Box, later to become the Magnavox Odyssey interactive TV/video gaming system.
Dr. Fujio Masuoka: Invented flash memory while at Toshiba and also developed SAMOS memory.
Dr. Robert Metcalfe: He worked at Xerox PARC in 1973 when he co-invented Ethernet, which is now a standard for connecting computers over short distances.
Dr. Claude Elwood Shannon: Credited with founding both digital computer and digital circuit design theory in 1937.
Dr. Andrew Viterbi: Invented the Viterbi algorithm used for decoding convolutionally encoded data that is used in cell phones for error correcting codes, as well as for speech recognition, DNA analysis and other applications.
Founders/Corporate Executives
Dr. Eli Harari: Co-founder and former CEO of SanDisk. The company invented or co-developed many of the standard memory card formats used in CE products ranging from digital cameras to smartphones.
Stanley S. Hubbard: In 1981, Hubbard Broadcasting started U.S. Satellite Broadcasting (USSB), and was instrumental in the development and launch of the first digital satellite system for television in 1994.
Sam Runco: Founder of Runco International, the company was the first to introduce a line doubler with a multi-frequency projector in 1990, as well as the first multiple-aspect-ratio controller, the ARC-IV, to the high-performance home theater market.
Retailers/Buying Groups/Distributors
Sandy Bloomberg: Founder of Tweeter, the specialty consumer electronics retail chain that had more than 100 stores that marketed high-performance electronics products.
Journalist
Team: Ivan Berger and Lance Braithwaite worked together at Berger Braithwaite Labs/Video Magazine (Sound & Video Magazine) and wrote extensive product reviews.
The CEA has also announced that TV and film actress Eliza Dushku will serve as the ambassador for its 2012 CES Entertainment Matters Program.
The Entertainment Matters event is entering its second year, and it is designed for Hollywood film, television and digital industry members to learn more about the trends and technologies that are driving the consumer electronics industry. As part of her participation in CES Dushku will also contribute to Spike TV's live coverage of the show. Dushku is a veteran actress whose TV credits include Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Tru Calling and Dollhouse, and whose movie credits include True Lies, Bring it On and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.
"I'm honored to be the first ambassador to the Entertainment Matters program at CES and special contributor to Spike TV's 'CES All Access Live' coverage programming," states the Boston-bred actress. "I'm incredibly fortunate to have great, tech savvy fans who constantly push me to stay ahead of the curve in consumer technology, which I'm very passionate about. I love going to CES, and I'm excited to now have a real platform to encourage more of my film and television industry colleagues experience CES."
