While 195 million shoppers, which is up 13 percent from 2008, shopped over the Black Friday weekend, the average spending dropped 7.9 percent to $343.31, according to ShopperTrak.

ShopperTrak, a research firm that monitors more than 50,000 stores, says sales on Black Friday rose just 0.5 percent to $10.66 billion. That compared with a 3 percent year-over-year Black Friday increase in 2008 and an 8.3 percent increase in 2007.

The National Retail Federation says Americans spent an estimated $41.2 billion over the holiday weekend. Total spending in 2008 was an estimated 41 billion.

Online shopping was a major bright spot for Black Friday. comScore says e-commerce was up 11 percent to $595 million from 2008. Amazon.com and Walmart.com were the most visited sites.

Analysts say the decline in average spending could be in part to more shoppers planning to buy online. Shop.org says 96.5 million Americans plan to shop on Cyber Monday (today), which is up from 85 million in 2008. About 87.1 percent of retailers have a special promotion for Cyber Monday, up from 83.7 in 2008 and 72.2 percent in 2007, according to Shop.org.

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) says HDTVs, digital cameras and Blu-ray players were the top attractions on Black Friday.
