6 Pop Songs Great for Audio Demos

Here are six pop recordings that aren't lifeless from over-compression and are ideal for audio demos.

Pink has had a string of pop hits over the past several years and, unlike many of her peers, her albums generally have good dynamic range.

I recently toured the world-renowned National Research Council (NRC) of Canada. At one point during the tour, I was sitting with a group of audio journalists discussing system demos.

I said that the emotional connection with the music is more important than sound quality and that all of the typical things that audiophiles look for in music don’t equate with the mass market.

I than began to bemoan the stereotypical Diana Krall demo snoozefests the audio industry typically rolls out that make no connection with most people.

Using the Dynamic Range Database website, which analyzes and documents the dynamic range of music, I’ve compiled six songs from the pop music genre that people should consider using for system demos.

The Dynamic Range Database uses a rating system that assigns a number to an album. The higher the number, the more dynamic the recording is. While it doesn’t rate specific songs, it does provide overall, minimum and maximum ratings for an entire album.

The benefit of using recordings that have documented dynamics is that it enables a quality audio system to showcase its true music reproduction capabilities. Those who choose to use recordings like the ones recommended here also eliminate the variable of a consumer bringing their own demo content, which may not have the same production values.
