10 Popular MDU Products

03.27.2009 — For years, the custom electronics community has focused on the glamour of media rooms, dedicated theaters, multiroom A/V and automation systems for the single-family home.

Sometimes overlooked, however, are solutions for multi-dwelling units (MDU), housing complexes and gated community housing projects.

Come on, who are you kidding with this article? I would love to know how this list was determined ... I can’t say that I’ve ever seen an apartment building with in-wall subwoofers in the units. Most of the time you’re lucky to get a 14” structured wiring panel.

Don’t get me wrong, I like the products presented—the DIRECTV SWM module is especially handy, and the Control4 energy manager has great potential. I just have to take “popular” with a HUGE grain of salt without further validation for some of these items. This simply isn’t the reality of the multifamily market today, except in a very small percentage of high-end condos.
